The primary objective of the GRSE is to provide a solution to the needs shipbuilding requirement of the Indian Coast and Indian Navy. It was incorporated in 1934 under the government of India.
It has 3 facilities of units, While the first unit for shipbuilding located in Kolkata, second unit for built ship located in Rajabagan Dockyard and third unit for fitting and repair section.

- 1st year : Rs.24,000/- per month
- 2nd year : Rs.26,000/- per month
Qualification :-
Journeyman (Structural Fitter):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Structural Fitter / Fabricator / Sheet Metal Work / Fitter trades.
Journeyman (Fitter):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Fitter / Weapon Fitter / MMTM.
Journeyman (Welder):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Welder / Welder (Gas & Electric) / TIG/MIG Welder / Welder (GMAW & GTAW) / Welder (Pipe) / Welder (Pipe & Pressure Vessels) / Welder (Structural) / Welder (Fabrication & Fitting) / Welder (Welding & Inspection) / Advance Welder trades.
Journeyman (Crane Operator):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Electrician trade.
Journeyman (Machine Operator):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Millwright Mechanic / MMTM trades.
Journeyman (Machinist):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Machinist / Turner / Machinist (Grinder) trades.
Journeyman (Pipe Fitter):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Pipe Fitter / Plumbing trades.
Journeyman (Rigger):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Rigger / Carpenter trades.
Journeyman (Driver Material Handling):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Diesel Mechanic trade with valid Heavy Vehicle Driving License.
Journeyman (Electronic Mechanic):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Electronic Mechanic trade.
Journeyman (Diesel Mechanic):
- Matriculation (10 std. pass) with NAC / NTC in Diesel Mechanic / Mechanic Diesel / Mechanic (Marine Diesel) trades.
